Information On Hydra

Hydra is one of the islands of Argosaronic Bay close to Athens.

Hydra is popular for many reasons, but the main ones are two. First Hydra is very close to Athens and secondly it is a very picturesque island that excudes elegance.

Hydra island is famous for the Miaoulia, a popular event that happens once per year on the Saturday closest to 21st of June. They are three-day events in honor of the great Hydra admiral Andreas Miaoulis who greatly contributed to the Liberation of Greece. The festivities culminate with the representation of the Old Man's Naval Battle and the burning of the Turkish Flagship, solemnly closing with fireworks on the third and last day of the events.

There are plenty to see in Hydra town. The main town is characterized by its picturesque harbor filled with fishing boats and luxury yachts. There are many lovely neoclassical mansions scattered around the town as well are many traditional windmills. Hydra Island is also dotted with remnants of its historical fortifications, including bastions and cannons.
