Attractions in KythiraAttractions On KythiraChora of KythiraThe capital of Kythira is a scenic settlement that started being built on the 13th century. The influences from Eptanisa, Cyclades and Peloponese are apparent in the architecture of the buildings. On the main square there are tall palm trees while at its highest peak stands the castle where the historical records of the island are kept, with manuscripts and texts of the 16th century. Monastery of Panagia MyrtidiotissaThis is the largest monastery on Kythira located west, in a place with lots of myrtle trees, after which it was probably named. You can see the monastery from a distance, thanks to the imposing 26 meter tall belfry made of limestone. The most impressive thing to see here is the icon of Panagia Myrtidiotissa, while there are other rare ecclesiastical relics kept in the basement. Archaeological Museum of KythiraThe museum exhibits findings from various excavations all over Kythira. The exhibits are dated from the prehistoric times up until the classical ages, with the most imporant one the archaic marble lion of the 6th century B.C. Telephone 27360 31739. Byzantine Museum of KythiraThe Byzantine Museum of Kythira is housed in the Analipseos Temple in the area of Kato Livadi. The collection includes icons, murals, religious utensils, ceramics and parts of an Early Christian mosaic floor. Telephone 27360 31731. Stone Bridge of KatouniThis is a very important attraction as it is the largest of its kind not only in Greece, but in the Balkans as well with a length of 110 meters, 15 meters height and 6 meters wide. You will find in in Livadi, while close by there is the so called English School, a building of neo-gothic style (one of few in Greece) which you will want to photograph. Fonissa WaterfallKythira is one of the few islands where you will find waterfalls! It is an enchanting scenery with the water pouring down from a 20 meter height with the huge green platanus trees as a background image. If you are tempted to take a swim in the green water you should know that even during the summer, the water is frozen. A bit down the road from the Fonissa waterfall, which is also called Fairytale waterfall, there is another surprise waiting for you: the 20 watermills that were once used for milling are now deserted. The waterfalls are in the area of Mylopotamos. Agia Sofia CaveThe 4 million year old cave is very large, with a surface of 2200 m2 and a route length for visitors 200 meters. Here you can see stunning stalactite formations and murals of saints of the 13th century. The cave is in Mylopotamos and it was named after the little church of Agia Sofia that is found in its entrance. PaleochoraPaleochora is a village at the north of Kythira and it is totally deserted. It was once the capital of Kythira up until 1537 when it was destroyed by Barbarosa. It is worth visiting to admire the unique religious paintings that have survived. Lighthouse of MoudariThis lighthouse is at cape Spathi, at the northern point of Kythira, and it is one of the biggest of its kind in Greece with a height of 25 meters. It was built by the English on 1857 and it is worth a visit as the view for the top if magnificent. HytraHytra is an islet very close to Kapsali which you can visit by boat. Here you will find one of the most impressive attractions of Kythira, the water cave which used to be the shelter of seals up until recently, when the human presence drove them away. The best time to visit the cave is late in the noon, when the sun rays go inside creating some brilliant coloring. The sea here is very shallow so you need to be careful if you fancy taking a dive.
