It is dedicated to the historical development and culture of the island from prehistory up to the metabyzantine period, and the exhibits are presented by thematic units. Among others, you will see bronze and marble sculptures, pottery, clay figurines, local artifacts, coins, religious items and miniature weapons. Kalymnos Maritime and Folklore MuseumIt is housed in one of the finest neoclassical buildings of Kalymnos at the harbor and is open to the public since 1994. Its collection includes exhibits on local maritime history and sponge diving, while hosting several items from ancient shipwrecks. There are also photographs, full traditional diving equipment, sponge processing equipment, even some sponge-diving vessels that were withdrawn. In the same building lies the Folklore Museum with remarkable exhibits from the local folk culture. Marine Life and Findings MuseumThis private museum operates on the seaside Vlyhadia village. One part of its collection is dedicated to the presentation of the sponge diving art. It also hosts a wide variety of exhibits from the island's marine life, as well as artifacts from ancient shipwrecks (amphoras, etc). Traditional House of KalymnosThe traditional house of Kalymnos is a private folklore museum built in the area of Vothyni, on the way to Vlyhadia village. Vouvali MansionIt was built in the late 18th century and is located near the archaeological museum. It is an excellent sample of urban architecture of that time combined with the island architecture, while also bearing decorative elements from the central European style. Church of ChristOn Kalymnos there is total of 23 Paleochristianic 5th and 6th century churches still preserved. The most famous is Christ of Jerusalem, a basilica within walking range from Pothia, on the way to Panormos. It is built in the place where the temple of Apollo used to stand, while some parts of the ancient temple were used to build it. It is worth seeing the sanctuary apse which is in good condition and the mosaic representations of animals in their natural environment. Rina FiordIn Vathy village, at the east, you will find the scenic Rina harbor where the long and narrow bay looks like a fiord, creating a rare sight. The great natural beauty and the peaceful scenery are serious reasons to come for a walk, a swim or for dinner. This region is of great archaeological interest with findings from the prehistoric times up the Hellenistic era. Healing Baths of ThermaYou will find the Healing baths at the south edge of Pothia bay. The radioactive water of 37 degrees Celsius is ideal for cases of rheumatism and arthritis. Telephone 22430 59141. CastleThe byzantine castle of Pothia was built during the 11th century and inside it has about ten little churches of the 15th and 16th century. In Chorio village there is another castle, the Pera Kastro, also called Chrysoheria Castle (from the icon of Panagia with the golden hand). Walking up to the castle you will come across 3 stone windmills, and inside the castle you will see remains of several buildings and houses. Kalymnos CavesOn the southeastern part of Kalymnos, close to Vathy village and almost 12 meters above the sea surface, there is the Daskalio Cave, where prehistoric findings were dug up. Other caves are the Cave of the Nymphs, also called Cave of the Seven Virgins, and the Kefala Cave to the southwest, decorated with huge impressive stalactites.
