Beaches in Kythira
Beaches Of KythiraOn Kythira you will find many fantastic beaches which are usually not organized. Before going to a beach you need to take into account the weather, as many beaches may prove to be unsuitable due to the strong and frequent winds. - Kalami (West Kythira): A superb little beach close to Mylopotamos. I tis usually empty as it is not widely known and more importantly due to the difficult access. After a 20 minute difficult and tiresome walk that involves some climbing down, you will finally reach its turquoise waters. Here you can enjoy both your privacy and the imposing scenery created by the tall cliffs that surround the beach. Make sure you carry with you some water and an umbrella.
- Kaladi (Southeast Kythira): A fantastic beach with white pebble and clean blue sea which is the trademark of the island. The approximately 100 stairs that you need to climb down and up do not discourage visitors, as Kaladi is one of the most popular beaches on the island. The main identifier of the beach is the large rock at its side which is in the sea. You will find it not far from Paleopoli at the east, but make sure to pack your umbrella and water before coming here, as there are no tourist facilities.
- Fyri Ammos (Southeast Kythira): This beach is a rare sight as it has a redish color. It is quiet popular as it is very large in size, while having great natural beauty and clean sea. On the beach there is a canteen and some umbrellas. Be careful as there is another beach with the same name in the area of Agia Pelagia.
- Kapmponada (Southeast Kythira): A long beach of wild beauty at the east. It has large pebbles, deep water and it is exactly what you need if you want seclusion and quiet. You can quickly and easily access the beach through a smooth dirt road.
- Melidoni (South Kythira): A beautiful protected beach in a narrow bay at the south of the island with a small islet at its entry. The beach has nice thin sand, clean blue water, a canteen and some straw umbrellas, while behind the beach there is plenty of space used as a parking lot. To reach this beach you will have to follow the dirt road that starts from Drymonas village or get the boat from Kapsali.
- Halkos (South Kythira): A beautiful and popular beach with pebble and clean sea close to Kalamos village. It is relatively small in size and it is located in a scenic bay accessed by a smooth dirt road. The beach offers a canteen, umrellas, sunbeds and a parking space.
- Kapsali (South Kythira): This is the most organized and one of the most central beaches of Kythira as it is right next to Chora. It offers all sorts of amenities like umbrellas, sunbeds, watersports, taverns, cafeterias, and rooms to let. Besides the view of the castle of Chora that stands above the beach, you can enjoy the view from the Hytra islet right across.
- Sparagario (South Kythira): An impressive beach of rare beauty as it is surrounded by tall rocky cliffs, giving the impression that you are in a canyon. The beach has white pebble and blue crystal water, while most of the day there is shade thanks to the rocks. It is found right next to Kapsali, from where you can access it by a path on foot or by boat.
- Agia Pelagia (Northeast Kythira): This is an amazing long stretch of thin grayish sand at the northeast, next to the Agia Pelagia village. It is one of the few organized beaches you will come across on Kythira with umbrellas, sunbeds, water sports, taverns and rooms to let. The beach gets very crowded as it is also easily accessible through the main road.
- Fourni (Northeast Kythira): A small and rather desolate beach at the northeast. This picturesque beach has a grayish color, while it is laid with pebble, offering deep blue water and a canteen. You can get to this beach by a passable dirt road.
- Kakia Lagkada (Northeast Kythira): An organized beach right next to Lorentzou beach. It offers umbrellas, sunbeds, a canteen, water sports and more.
- Platia Ammos (North Kythira): A quiet beach at the north edge of the island, a bit before the lighthouse. It is a long and very wide beach with sand and pebble. In a short range you will find several taverns and rooms to let.
- Diakofti (East Kythira): This is one of the most famous beaches of Kythira thanks to its turquoise green water and its white sand. Due to the shallow sea, this beach is ideal for families with little kids. The trademark of the beach is the shipwreck which has become a tourist attraction. Right across the beach lies the small verdant islet Prasonisi, which you can easily reach with a little swimming.
