Most beaches of
Ithaca are small in length and laid with pebble. The northern beaches are hard to reach contrary to the southern beaches which have easy access. Many of the beaches of
Ithaca are accessible only from the sea.
- Aspros Gialos (West Ithaca): This beach is also called Agios Giannis as it is right next to the Agios Giannis village. This is the best sandy beach of Ithaca with some big rocks in the sea which are ideal for climbing and diving into the sea. The beach is not organized and there are no shops around, however there are some umbrellas. You can reach it easily through a short stone-paved path after leaving your car behind.
- Filiatro (Southeast Ithaca): Filiatro is an organized beach, usually crowded, at Vathy, in an all green landscape with trees that reach the shore. This beach offers clean blue water, white pebbles, wooden sunbeds and a cantine.
- Loutsa (Southeast Ithaca): This beach is in Vathy, right next to the port, and during the summer it is swamped with people. The beach is organized with umbrellas, sunbeds and a cantine. The water is very shallow and half of the beach has sand while the rest has pebbles.
- Sarakiniko (Southeast Ithaca): A beach with pebble and beautiful emerald green water close to Vathy. It is worth traversing the trail that goes over the rocks (at your right as you look at the sea) to get to the next bay with an even better beach and less people. It is located at the south west edge of Ithaca, very close to Filiatro beach.
- Dexia (Southeast Ithaca): It is also called Dexa and it is just 1,5 kilometer north of Vathy. It is a popular organized beach with blue flag and shallow water, making it ideal for families with little kids. The beach is small in width and surrounded by trees, while the olive trees almost reach the sea.
- Skinos or Shinos (Southeast Ithaca): At the southeast of Ithaca, very close to Vathy, lies the Skinos beach. It is a narrow beach with sand and pebble, in an enchanting all-green scenery. Pine trees and Tamarisk trees almost reach the sea, while the sea bottom is laid with sand.
- Gidaki (Southeast Ithaca): This is considered to be the most impressive beach of Ithaca and one of the best in Ελλάδα with the unique disadvantage being the difficult access, as you reach it by boat from Vathy. If you are an adventurer you can reach Gidaki through a path that starts from Skinos, walking through the forest for 45 minutes and enjoying a beautiful green scenery. The clean turquoise water, the all-white pebble and the sharp cliffs compose an impressive sight overwhelming visitors. Make sure you carry an umbrella with you because there is no natural shade anywhere on the beach.
- Poli (Northeast Ithaca): Right under Stavros settlement lies this long beach in a green bay. The organized beach with the shower and the cantine has a small marina with a few boats at its side. From there you can catch a boat to other, less accessible, beaches of Ithaca.
- Afales (North Ithaca): A beautiful beach in a stunning landscape with high cliffs. Only few enjoy the inviting blue water, as the beach is accessed by boat. The most adventurous can reach the beach through a dirt road that starts from Platrithia village. There is no shade at Afales beach, so make sure you carry an umbrella.
- Platys Ammos (North Ithaca): A large and beautiful beach at the Afales bay. It offers visitors blue green water, sand and pebble, but not easy access as you can only come by boat from Kioni or Frikes.
- Aetos - Piso Aetos (East Ithaca): Aetos beach is at the center of Ithaca, at its east side, a few kilometers north of Vathy and its sand stretches for quiet a distance. At the same height of Ithaca but from the west side lies the Piso Aetos beach, with great view to Antisamos of Kefalonia island. The beach is surrounded by bald mountains while here you can find the small harbor where you can travel to the near by islands, Kefalonia and Lefkada.
