Attractions in ZanteAttractions On ZanteZante TourYou can go on a tour of Zante by boat, but in case you do it is best to choose one of the largest boats that depart from the harbor of Zante. If you do not want to waste an entire day on a tour of the entire island, you can take the boat that goes to Navagio, or the Blue Caves, or Marathonisi (an island in Lagana Bay), or a combination of those. Some of the boats have glass bottoms in order to provide a better view. If you are lucky, you may even see a Caretta-Caretta from up close. Blue CavesThey are two sequential water caves at the north of Zante. If you take the boat to Navagio beach, the boat will surely make a stop at these caves for some photographs and perhaps some swimming. The color of the water along with the rocky formations of the caves makes for a great sight. Zante National Maritime ParkIt is not the park that you have in mind, but rather an entire area that is under protection belonging to the European Network Natura 2000, covering most of Zante and the entire area of Lagana Bay. This is not only due to the Careta-Caretta, as this area exhibits a rich natural environment. The Maritime Park, that covers most of the south of Zante, is the place where the giant sea turtle comes to lay its eggs. Solomou SquareThis is the place to be in at night, as it has dozens of shop, ranging from taverns to gift-shops. Here you will find many of the most important attractions of Zante, like the Byzantine Museum, the Cultural Center and the church of Agios Nikolaos. In the middle of the square you can see the statue of Dionysios Solomos, the writter of the Greek National Anthem, as he was born here. For a small price you can also ride a carriage driven by horses. Zante Byzantine Art MuseumYou cannot miss the huge building which is located at Solomou square. Here you will find a rich collection of paintings, holy icons and sculptures. Among others, you will also get to see paintings of the way the town of Zante used to be, before the devastating earthquakes. Museum of Natural History HelmisHere you will come in contact with the natural heritage of not only Zante, but that of the entire world in Agia Marina. At the first level you will find the exhibition of bird and animal species. At the basement lies the exhibition of the sea world, especially that of Caretta-Caretta. You will also see fossils, rocks and minerals, but the most impressive thing is by far the shell of a giant prehistoric snail that had been turned to stone. It was found in Madagascar and it weights 200 kg and has a diameter of 2 meters! You will find more information in the museum's website. Museum of Dionysios SolomosActually this museum is dedicated not only to Dionysios Solomos, but to all celebrities of Zante. Church of Agios DionysiosSaint Dionysios is the patron saint of Zante and is greatly honored here. It was built in the early 18th century and it is located on the harbor of Zante where you can easily find it. It is a large church with the relic of the Saint and some interesting paintings inside. MpohaliThis hill oversees the entire town of Zante, providing visitors with a marvelous panoramic view, especially at night. It is an ideal place to have a drink while watching the sunset in one of the many coffee shops and bars. On this hill lies also the Venician Castle which you may visit during the day. At the edge of the square there is the church of Zoodohos Pigi (translates to life-giving spring) inside of which is a holy icon dated at 848 AC. Island of Agios Sostis LaganasThis is a tiny island, near Laganas beach, that is connected to the rest of Zante with a 50 meter narrow wooden bridge. If you cross the bridge and make it to the island you will get to have your drink in a beach-bar in one of the most amazing sceneries ever. KastroVery close to Bohali lies the castle, providing visitors with a fantastic view of Zante. It was built during the Byzantine era and has since suffered sever damage by the invasion of the Turks (1480 AC) and by earthquakes. Inside the castle you may see the ruins of several churches and other historic buildings. Agia MarinaThe locals call this church the Parthenon of Zante, as the roof of the church is standing on eight columns similar to the ones found at the Parthenon temple, at Acropolis.
