Chora, along with the Monastery and the Cave, has been declared as a World Heritage Monument by Unesco. Apocalypse CaveThe famous Cave of Apocalypse is found south of the Skala village, between the harbor and Chora. This is where Saint John wrote the Book of Revelation and where thousands of tourists come every year, as this is the most important religious site in Greece. Inside the cave there are worth-while byzantine wall-paintings and on the ceiling wall there is the triple crack, symbol of the Holy Triad, from where it is said that the voice of God dictated the Book of Revelation to Saint John. Monastery of Saint JohnThis Monastery look more like a castle from the outside as it is a fusion of monastery and castle. It is one of the oldest and most important monastic centers of the East, while in its vast area you can find important attractions like the Ecclesiastical Museum, the Library (which in not open to the public), unique icons and a wonderful wood-curved templon. The monastery was built during the 11th century A.C. at the position of an older early-Christian basilica, which was in turn build on top of an ancient temple of Goddess Artemis. Here you will see remarkable treasures of Patmos, like jewelery of Byzantine emperors, priest robes with gold and precious stones, old icons, manuscripts, etc. Simantiri Folklore MuseumThe museum is found in Chora and it is housed in a traditional house of the 17th century belonging to Simantiri family. Inside you will see aristocratic furnitures, paintings, icons and various items of everyday life of the locals of Patmos of the past ages.
