Nisyros Archaeological Museum

It opened in 2001 and it is housed in the building of Gennadios Estia at Mandraki. Its collection consists of vases, tombstones, sculptures and architectural parts, mostly from the Hellenistic and roman ages. At the back side of the Town Hall lies the outdoor Collection of Antiquities with samples of sculpture found all over Nisyros.

Nisyros Historical and Folklore Museum

It is found across the church of Panagia Potamitissa at Mandraki and it is housed in a two-storey mansion of the 18th century. The collection includes embroidery, traditional costumes of Nisyros, old hand mills, chests and various objects of everyday use. There is also a representation of the traditional kitchen of Nisyros.

Nisyros Volcanological Museum

This is the first museum of tis kind in Greece and it is located in Nikia, at the edge of the caldera, offering a unique view. It is well-equipped with samples and pictures of rocks, maps, diagrams, photographs, models of volcanoes, computer simulations and much more. Thanks to the technology the visitors can learn about the volcanic activity of the area through three dimensional moving images. Telephone 22420 31400.

Volcano

The volcano is the most impressive attraction of Nisyros with a three kilometer long caldera and various craters with that of Agios Stefanos being the major one, as it is one of the largest in the world with a diameter of 260 meters and 30 meters depth. The last notable eruption occurred in 1888, since then the volcanic activity is limited to fumaroles gases reaching the surface through cracks, while the smell from the sulfur is strong. We suggest wearing closed shoes.

Paleokastro

The ancient Acropolis of the 4th century B.C. is at the west part of Nisyros, at Paleokastro, offering great view. Like the impressive gigantic walls it was built with large blocks of black volcanic rock. There is an inscription still intact, found at the north of the Acropolis, determining the public space that always had to be empty for defensive purposes.

Castle

It was founded in 1315 by the Knight of Saint John and it stands since then over Mandraki. On its walls you can still distinguish the banners of the Grand Masters, while nearby there are ruins from the fortification wall of the classical ages. There are ruins from other medieval castles on Nisyros as well.

Monastery of Panagia Spiliani

The Monastery of Panagia Spiliani of 1600, patroness saint of Nisyros, is located west of Mandraki and it is adjacent to the castle, while virtually hanging in the air. The catholic of the church is shaped in the natural cave cavity with built-in parts from early Christian churches, while the wood curved temple has additions by a later marble temple. The 18th century icon of Panagia has an older depiction of Agios Nikolaos at the back. You can reach the monastery by climbing the 130 steps that start from Lagkadi, from the side of the sea.

Emporios and Nikia

There are two other settlements on Nisyros besides Mandraki, Emporios and Nikia, which are lovely mountainous villages built at the edge of the caldera. Do not miss the pebbled Porta Square at Nikia and the tiny Thermi Cave at Emporios which is a natural steam bath.

Thermal Springs

A bit east of Mandraki lie the Municipal Thermal Springs. They are open to the public but they are still underdeveloped and not fully organized.
