It is filled with white little churches and its picturesque alleys are packed with people and fun. There are a lot of taverns and bars in Chora, and every day is a party that lasts until the morning of the next day. Do not get surprised if you see a couple of pelicans moving around in the streets, as they are a living trademark of Mykonos, having been photographed more than any monument. Alefkandra - Little VeniceAlefkandra is one of the most impressive settlements in the Greek islands, being built on the beach. That is the reason it is also called the Little Venice of Mykonos. The balconies of the houses are hanging right over the sea and the waves smash on the doors and windows, making for a quite unique sight. Ano MeraIt is a quiet little village, affected by tourism much less that Chora. It is a picturesque village that showcases the traditional Cycladic architecture with freshly white painted houses and balconies filled with flowers. Mykonos Archaeological MuseumIt is one of the oldest museums in Greece, built in 1905. It has a large collection, mostly of ceramic art of 9th up to 5th century B.C. gathered from the near by Greek islands. Among the exhibits there are some ceramic pots of the Prehistoric era, proving that there was a civilization on Mykonos since the 3rd millenium B.C. Folklore MuseumIt was founded in Mykonos on 1958 and is housed in a traditional house which is partially build on top of a part of the Castle walls. You can see mostly furniture and decoration, woven clothing, oblations and plates. Aegean Maritime MuseumThis Museum was founded recently, on 1983, in a traditional Cycladic building of the 19th century, while it was completely renovated in 2024. It is considered one of the most beautiful of its kind in Greece. It has an interesting collection of instruments, maps and coins. One of the most interesting collections is the models of ships ranging from the prehistoric times until the 20th century. The Aegean Maritime Museum is open daily (except Monday) 10:00-13:00 & 18:00-21:00. Agricultural MuseumIt is housed inside one of the windmills, the Boni Windmill, build in the 16th century B.C., which happens to be one of the most photographed historical monuments of Mykonos. Actually the museum is not confined inside the windmill, but is rather an entire outdoor area of two acres. You can see a collection of farm tools, a well, a traditional oven, a basin used to wash the clothes, a threshing platform, a wine-press platform, etc. Paraportiani ChurchLocated at the Castle of Chora, it represents one of the best samples of traditional Cycladic architecture. It is actually not one church, but rather a complex of five churches, one built on top of the other four, that are connected internally. Monastery of Panagia TourlianiThis famous monastery was founded in 1542 in Ano Mera by two monks from the near by island of Paros. It is a characteristic sample of temple architecture found on the Greek islands and it holds some interesting samples of traditional sculpture. WindmillsThose famous windmills are a trademark of Mykonos and they are one of the most photographed sites of the island. Delos islandIf you have a day to spare it is a great idea to go on an excursion to Delos, an island very close to Mykonos. Delos was the religious center of Ancient Greece and it was considered a sacred place, being the birthplace of god Apollo and goddess Artemis.
