On the west side of the castle lies the 18th century Church of Panagia, while inside the temple there is an Ecclesiastical museum with rare religious manuscripts, utensils, vestments, icons, etc. In the second courtyard of the castle there are two more abandoned churches which were built somewhere between 1306 and 1492. Agios IsidorosThe rock in the sea with the church of Agios Isidoros on its top is the trademark of Leros. It is great for photographs and you can also visit it if it is not too windy, through a narrow platform that connects it to the rest of the island. You will find it on the north side of Gourna bay, a bit west of Kokkali. Monastery of Agios Ioannis TheologosThis is the most remarkable medieval monument of Leros and one of the most important in the Aegean. The basilica was built in the early 10th century with a wooden roof which was later (around 1.200 A.C.) replaced with a dome, when the murals were added. Parts from early Christian monuments of the area were used for its construction. It is located in Lakki village. Agia KiouraAgia Kioura is located in Partheni and was built during the 18th century on top of an older temple. This is an important historical monument due to the frescoes painted by political prisoners during the period 1960-1970. The monument has been fully restored. Panagia KavouradenaPanagia Kavouradena is a small church by the sea, built around the rocks. Besides the scenic chapel it is worth seeing the unique icon with Panagia and the Christ painted inside a crab, after which the church is named. You will find it south, near Xirokampos, with easy access through an asphalt road. WindmillsDriving up towards the castle you will see six windmills on your left, which are overseeing the harbor. It is worth making a stop to see them take pictures from up close, as they star in some of the island's most beautiful photographs. Leros attractionsLeros attractionsLeros attractions |
