Artemis TempleThe temple of Artemis is open to visitors and it is located within the site of Porto Myrina Palace hotel. Artemis was worshiped as the patron goddess of ancient Myrina and her temple was in use up until the Hellenestic period. Telephone 22510 22087. Myrina CastleIt is also called Paliokastro and it stands proudly over the town of Myrina, while the evenings it is illuminated, making for a beautiful spectacle. It was founded in 1186 and it is one of the largest forts in the Aegean and one of the best maintained. Inside the castle you can see the ruins of administrative buildings, tank clusters, galleries, while the turrets provide a magnificent view. In the castle there are about 100 deers that were brought from Rhodes, moving around freely, an ideal target for a picture. Desert - Pachies AmmoudiesOn Lemnos there is a small but very real desert, the only one in Europe. The area is called Pachies Ammoudies and it is found north, close to Katalakkos village. The dunes take up an area of about 70 acres while there is surrounding vegetation. It is worth taking pictures of this rare sight and walking on the sand dunes. Lemnos Petrified ForestMost part of the Petrified Forest of Lemnos is in the region of Moudros. The trees were turned to stone when millions of years ago they were covered by the volcanic lava. Hot SpringsAt Therma, in a verdant landscape close to Myrina, lie the Hot Springs. Filoktitis CaveIn case you visit the Kaviron Sanctuary it is a great opportunity to check out the water cave of Filoktitis which is right underneath, and perhaps take a dive. Here, according to tradition, Filoktitis lived for 12 years after the Achaeans left him behind on their way to Troy, because he was bit by a snake, causing him to produce an intense stench. Mountainous VillagesLemnos has some remarkable villages, like Kontias and Romanou, which are worth a visit. Kontias (southwest) is a traditional settlement with noteworthy architecture, stone houses and two fully renovated windmills at the village entrance. Romanou is located east (a bit north of Moudros) with distinct characteristic the scattered half-dug jars used by locals to store wine and olive oil. The imposing mansions, stylish public buildings and picturesque old churches will impress you. Panagia KakaviotissaPanagia Kakaviotissa is the only church in the world without a roof, and it is highly atmospheric since it is also located inside the carved steep rocks. The whole area offers beautiful views and the landscape has a wild beauty. Since it will take about half an hour of uphill walking from the end of the passable dirt road to reach the church, it is best to come early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
