Attractions in KythnosAttractions On KythnosMesariaThe scenic capital of Kythnos is built ampitheatrically at a hillside. Its narrow cobbled road will lead you to old bright-white little churches with remarkable steeples or to traditional coffee shops with ouzo side-snacks and taverns on the roofs of old houses. Piatsa is the main road of Chora and this is where most of its shops are found. Byzantine MuseumIt is located at the Dryopida village and it is housed in the church of Agios Georgios. Its small collection mostly includes ecclesiastical relics of Kythnos from the Byzantine period. Hydrotherapy CenterIn Loutra village, at the north part of the island, you will find the Hydrotherapy Center of Kythnos. The warm water coming out of the two springs (of Agioi Anargyroi and of Kakkavos), the only ones of their kind in Cyclades with sulfurous and ferrous waters, is ideal for a range of diseases (rheumatism, arthritis, dermatological, gynecological, heart diseases, etc). The building was designed by Ernst Ziller and it was built during the 19th century, while king Otto and queen Amalia used to come here in order to enjoy the beneficial effects of the hot springs. The Hydrotherapy Center is open to the public from July to October, from morning to 14:00 noon. Katafyki CaveYou will find the Katafyki cave in Dryopida (which used to be the capital of the island) at the location of Fires. This is one of the largest unused caves in Greece and is only partially open to the public. Its internal is like a labyrinth decorated with breath-taking stalactites and stalagmites. Folklore MuseumThis is also in Dryopida village. Its collection includes items from everyday use and traditional costumes worn by people of Kythnos during the past centuries. Oria CastleThe Castle of Oria now stands at the point where the capital of Kythnos used to be during the Byzantine period and the Venetian rule. It is located at the north edge of the island, close to Kefalos cape. Here you will get to see the ruins of two churches along with the remains of old murals, but most importantly amazing view. Panagia Kanala ChurchPanagia Kanala is the patron of Kythnos and its temple is found in the homonymous settlement, at the southeast edge of the island. At the temple of the church there is a large portable icon of Panagia Vrefokratousa, the work of Emmanouil Skordilis. Archaeological Site of MaroulaAt Maroulas location, excavations have uncovered human skeletons and architectural remains of the Mesolithic Period (8000-6000 B.C.). The skeletons were found in a sitting positions and are the oldest outdoor burials in the Aegean region, while there was also a piece of paved floor found, belonging to an ancient house, bone and stone tools, and positions of round houses.
