Chora of Amorgos

The scenic Chora of Amorgos is one of the most beautiful capitals of Cyclades. Explore its cobbled roads and you will admire the traditional Cycladic architecture of the all-white little churches and marvelous dome passageways. At the highest peak of Chora stands the Castle while the windmills seen across at the mountain-side are a beautiful touch to the romantic scenery. You have to visit the Platysteno, the central road of Chora, where most shops are found and the Kalogerikou Square which is a wonderful balcony to the Aegean Sea in order to enjoy the great view and shoot some unique pictures.

Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa

Climbing towards the Byzantine Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa is not a piece of cake but it is worth the effort, as this is one of the most important and oldest religious centers of the Aegean, founded on 1088 A.C. However, the architecture of the monastery can impress you by itself, being built inside the core of the mountain which is like it has been cut vertically. Inside you will get to see some wonderful relics like the manuscripts, the holy gospels of the 10th century, the royal byzantine bull of the 11th century, elegant hand-made vestments, tributes, etc. The monastery is open to the public until the afternoon, but it closes at noon between 13:00 and 17:00.

Kastro

The climb to the Castle will reward you with a panoramic view of Chora from up high. The Venetian castle was built during the 13th century on top of the rocky bulk that stands out over Chora providing natural fortification. The cute little church of Agios Georgios plays the role of the gateway to the castle.

Amorgos Archaeological Museum

The Archaeological Museum of Amorgos is housed inside the famous Tower of Gavra at Platysteno of Chora. Its collection includes sculptures, reliefs, inscriptions, pottery, etc dating from the Prehistoric Ages up until the Roman Ages. Telephone 22850 29729.

Mountainous Villages

On Amorgos there are some amazing mountainous villages that are worth visiting, all of which are at the north. The most beautiful one is considered to be Tholaria with its painted alleys but the amphitheatrically build Potamos village and the Lagkada village with its white-painted alleys and arches are not far behind in beauty.

Pyrgos sto Chorio

This tower is located at the south part of Amorgos, close to Agia Triada village. It is the best preserved orthogonal tower in Cyclades which was built during the 4th century B.C. Besides its obvious defensive purpose, there is a theory that this was a Fryktoria, a part of a series of towers that were used for communication by light signals carried from one to the other. The tower is open to the public every day (except from Monday) until 15:00. Telephone 22850 72336.

Agia Anna Church

Not only the little church, but the entire area of Agia Anna became known because of the movie Deep Blue (Le Grand Bleu) of Luc Besson. The deep blue color of the sea from above impresses visitors and justifies the title of the movie.

Ecclesiastical Museum

The Ecclesiastical Museum is housed in a two-storey building in the streets of Chora. It has an interesting collection of icons, books, vestments etc. It is open everyday between 9:00-13:00 and 17:00-20:00, except Mondays.
