It offers superb panoramic view to the Aegean Sea while its colorful stone paved alleys are great for taking strolls. The stone built houses of Chora are decorated with bougainvilleas and vine trees, while the aesthetics and architecture of the settlement will surely impress you. While walking is Chora you will discover several remarkable chapels and at the highest point you can see the ruins of the old castle. National Maritime Park of AlonissosThe National Maritime Park of Alonissos may not be exactly what you have in mind. It is actually a vast sea area of 2.200 square kilometers at the northeast part of Sporades which includes several islands, of which the only inhabited island is Alonissos. The purpose of the National Maritime Park is the protection of the rich fauna of this area which includes over 300 fish species, dolphins, whales, rare coral reefs, endangered bird species and of course the Mediterranean Seal Monachus Monachus. Folklore Museum of AlonissosNext to the first entrance to the Castle of Chora, the so called Kastroporta, there is a small traditional house that operates as a folklore museum. Here you can find items from the everyday life of the people on Alonissos of the past centuries. Historical and Folklore Museum of AlonissosThe impressive stone museum opened its doors in Patitiri in 2001 and it was created by a local couple. In the basement you can see traditional items and clothes of Alonissos, on the ground floor there is a collection of ancient tools and military weapons and finally on the first floor you can see tools and accessories from pirate ships that stormed the Aegean Sea since the 16th century. This is a small treasure of the Byzantine Era which was built during the 13th century A.C. on a location with an amazing view to the Aegean Sea. It is really worth visiting and while you are here you can also enjoy the great view. Ancient Pottery WorkshopRight behind the beach of Tsoukalia lie the ruins of an ancient pottery workshop. It is an entire area filled with fragments of clay pots, on some the word Ikion is imprinted, from the ancient name of Alonissos (Ikos). MOm Exhibition CenterSince there is a good chance you will not be lucky enough to see a seal from up close, the next best thing would be to visit the MOm Exhibition Center in Patitiri. There you will find a lot of pictures, videos and briefing material concerning the Mediterranean Seal Monachus Monachus. Alonissos Underwater MuseumThe Underwater Museum is the first of its kind in Greece that is open to the public during the summer season. The Submarine Museum includes one of the largest shipwrecks of the Classical Era, dating between 425 and 420 BC. The shipwreck is considered of outstanding importance from an archaeological perspective, due to the large number of intact amphorae that have been preserved to this day. Its significance is so great that it has been named "The Parthenon of Shipwrecks."
