Ermoupoli


The beautiful Ermoupoli is the jewel of Syros. There are so many things to do here that you will hardly get bored no matter how many days you stay in Syros. Get lost in its picturesque alleys and explore its countless shops, bars and restaurants. Along the large harbor there are also many shops where you can sit to eat or drink something while enjoying the sea view. And if at some point you think you have walked all the picturesque cobbled streets of Ermoupoli, then walk up the hill where the Orthodox Church of the Resurrection is located or even visit Ano Syros, and you will realize that there is still a lot to see.

Miaouli Square


The central square of Ermoupoli is the meeting point and the pride of Syros. The core of the square is the impressive Town Hall of Ermoupoli, one of the largest of its kind in Greece designed by the famous architect Ernest Ziller. Around the Town Hall there are countless shops and cafeterias while the large marble-paved square is always filled with people and children playing.

Ermoupolis Town Hall


The impressive Town Hall of Ermoupoli is one of the largest of its kind in Greece and it was designed by the famous architect Ernest Ziller. You can visit it from morning until noon when it closes while the town hall employees are on the job.

Vaporia


The impressive Vaporia district with its majestic mansions reflects the wealth that once existed on Syros island. It is worth visiting Vaporia both during the day and at night, because the beauty you will see is different. Take pictures of the beautiful mansions and walk down the steps to the Ciel bar for a drink if it's night or a swim in the sea if it's day. There is no beach, only a platform from where people dive into the sea. Apart from the people there are also some adorable ducks swimming here.

Ano Syros


It is unthinkable not to walk in Ano Syros, not only because of the spectacular view but also for its great beauty and its numerous attractions. The narrow flowery alleys will lead you to many catholic churches and to well-concealed little shops. On the main alley there are countless shops of every kind, bars, taverns and souvenir-purchases. You are bound to hear the songs of Markos Vamvakaris and especially Fragkosyriani, as this is his place of origin and it is here where an exhibition about him lies.

Syros Arcaeological Museum


This is one of the oldest museums in Greece as it was founded in 1834, and it is housed in 4 rooms of the City Hall in Ermoupoli. The entrance is at the side of the building, at the stairs towards the back. In the first room you can see sculpture, inscriptions and tombstones. The second room hosts findings of the Protocycladic civilization of Halandriani, the most important being the significant cups with handles, the decorative compass, the Cycladic figurines and the enigmatic frying pot. The third room showcases findings from the Historical Times, like tombstones, inscriptions, sculptures and other miniature works. In the last room there is an exhibition dedicated to the archaeologist Christos Tsountas with a collection of mostly document and photographs. Entry fee is 2 euros. Telephone 22810 88487.

Ecclesiactical Museum of Ermoupoli


It operates on Syros since 1982 in a two-storey building on Dimitri Vafiadaki street next to the Park of Agios Nikolaos. Its collection consists mainly of 18th and 19th century items, like banners, wood crosses, liturgical books, sacred vessels, vestments from Russia and France, antimnisia, and other. The lady there will be more than glad to give you a tour. There is no entry fee.

Markos Vamvakaris Museum


Originally there was only one exhibition near the Markos Vamvakaris square, in Ano Syros. Since 2023 there is a second exhibition, 80 meters away towards the lower entrance (Kamara). The old exhibition is now called Memorabilia and the new one is called Experiences. In the old exhibition you will see many of his personal belongings like his bouzouki, manuscripts, tools, clothes, his watch, his identity card, etc. In the new exhibition there is audiovisual media (in two rooms) where people learn about the life of the great rebetis. This information was missing from the original museum and thus makes the exhibition complete. Entry fee is 5 euros and it includes both exhibitions.

Kini Aquarium


It was founded in 2002 and it is found in Kini settlement, close to the beach and it is unique in its kind in Cyclades. Inside you will see fish and shellfish of the Mediterranean, local boats, fishing equipment, and more. The Aquarium is open daily 11:30-17:00 except from Monday. Entry fee is 2 euros. Cultural Center of Syros


It is housed in a two storey neoclassical building in Ermoupoli, along with the Public Library and the Museum of Cycladic Art. Both the interior and the exterior of the building are impressive, while the garden is decorated with busts of Syrian scholars and artists. You can find it next to the Town Hall.

Art Gallery of Cyclades


It is open since 1994 in the customs building complex of Ermoupoli, in the harbor. The gallery hosts temporary exhibitions like the "The Greek Shipping Miracle" exhibition that was on display during August 2023. There is no permanent exhibition. Telephone 22810 80918.

Industrial Museum of Ermoupoli


It opened in 2000 in a building of 1888 which once hosted a color workshop, and it presents the industrial history of Syros. The exhibits are found in 5 rooms and they include drawings, maps, photographs, tools, ship models, etc. The most important items are found in the fourth room, and they are various kinds of machinery like looms, lathes, presses and more. In the first floor there is an electronic file with 3 dimensional representations of historical buildings and recordings of statements made by the workers. The museum is open daily 10:00-15:00 except Wednesday. Entry fee is 2 euros, while behind the museum there is parking space. Telephone 22810 84762.

Apollon Municipal Theatre


It is a two storey building that was constructed in 1862 in Ermoupoli and is a famous attraction of Syros. Its interior was built based on Italian theatres like La Scala of Milan (for this reason it is also called Little Scala of Milan) and it hosts important opera performances of Greek and European troutes. The annual Aegean Festival, a festival of international scope, is being held here since 2005. Telephone 22810 85192.

Church of Agios Georgios


The Catholic Metropolis of Agios Georgios is located in Ano Syros and it is a basilica of the 13th century with two rows of marble columns. The most impressive thing you will see inside is the marble floor, the wood-curved paneling and the statues of the saints at the entrance made by Italian sculptors of the 18th century.

Kimisi Theotokou Church


It is situated in Ermoupoli and it is one of its oldest churches in Syros, as it was build in 1829. It is really worth visiting in order to see the icon of Kimisi Theotokou painted by the famous El Greko, of which you can buy a copy. You will find it close to the casino at Stamatiou Proiou street.

Agios Nikolaos Church


The magnificent temple is located in the Vaporia district, the most aristocratic neighborhood of Ermoupoli. Outside it is surrounded by a raised marble courtyard while left and right of the main building stand the two church-bell towers. The facade of the temple is supported by 4 Corinthian style columns. Its interior decoration is splendid with a temple of Pentelic marble, a marble pulpit and paintings - images by leading painters of that time.

Church of Resurrection


The magnificent temple was dedicated to the "Resurrection of the Nation" and operated for the first time in 1880. It is on top of the orthodox hill offering a panoramic view. Besides being a temple it is also an important attraction, despite being overlooked, as it contains priceless religious artifacts. If you happen to meet the temple caretaker, mister Yiannis, do not hesitate to ask for a tour as he will be very glad to give you one.

Cycladic Art Museum


The Cycladic Art Museum is housed in a room on the first floor of the Cultural Center of Syros where copies of exhibits are showcased. The small yet interesting collection includes Cycladic figurines, pottery, tools and more.
