Attractions in ParosAttractions On ParosParos Archaeological MuseumThe Paros Archaeological Museum has a rich exhibition with remarkable findings, most of which are made with the famous lyhnitis marble, displayed in 3 rooms and in the outside yard. The exhibits that stand out are the part of the inscribed column known as Pario Chroniko (a chronology of events of 1580 B.C. up to 282 B.C.), the colossal 3,7 meter tall status of goddess Artemis, the statue of Gorgo of the 6th century B.C. and finally the famous Nike of Paros, one of the most beautiful ancient Greek statues. In the yard you will see the Phoenician type anthropoid sarcophagus, the only ones of their kind in Greece, and part of a mosaic of the 3rd century B.C. depicting the labors of Hercules. Telephone 22840 21231. Historical and Folklore MuseumIn this new museum, founded in 1999 in Naousa, you will see the personal collection of doctor Kaparis. The exhibits of the historical collection include pottery, lamps, maps, ancient coins, and byzantine lead seals, while the folklore collection is composed of 19th century furniture, agricultural tools, nautical instruments and items of everyday use. Telephone 22840-53453. Cyclades Folklore MuseumYou will find it at the southwest of Paros, close to the airport. It is a most unusual museum with the purpose of keeping alive the tradition the history of Cyclades. In its yard, along with the various farming tools, there are on display miniature copies of important architectural monuments of Cyclades, like the stone light-house of Andros, the medieval castle of Parikia, a typical pigeon-house of Tinos, the monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa of Amorgos and the Evaggelistria Church of Tinos. In its interior there are miniatures of trade and war ships that crossed the Mediterranean, of which stands out a Minoan ship of 1500 B.C. and specimens of fishing and trade ships, dating up to the 20th century. Post-Byzantine Icon CollectionIt is housed in the church of Agios Athanassios in Naousa. Its collection consists of works from various churches found all over Paros, which were made in local workshops. Besides a great number of icons, there are sacred vessels, detached wall paintings, engravings and temple sections. Folklore MuseumThis is a new museum in Marpissa with the purpose of recreating the traditional house of Paros during the past centuries. Panagia Ekatontapyliani ChurchIt is located at the center of Parikia and it is one of the most significant tourist attractions of Paros and one of the most remarkable Christian monuments of Greece. It is also called Katapoliani and it is one of the oldest churches as it was built in the 6th century. Here you will see the priceless icon of Panagia Vrefokratousa, the baptistery and sculptures of Christian and ancient Greek themes, while in the sanctuary there is the very interesting synthronon shaped like a small amphitheater and the housing over the altar. In the church there is an ecclesiastical museum operating with exceptional works of art, mostly old bizonal icons. LefkesLefkes is a scenic mountainous village of Paros with distinct architecture that is truly worth visiting. The 16th century village itself is an attraction, built amphitheatrically at an altitude of 250 meters. It looks like it has jumped out of a different era and its name is not coincidental (lefko is greek for white), with the white marble and the lime dominating. The stone paved alleys, the whitewashed terraces and the light-blue shutters make for an enjoyable stroll with the final destination the church of Agia Triada at the east, which is entirely made of parian marble like the classical ancient greek masterpieces. In the village ou will come across with several churches and old windmills, of which only two are saved. FInally it is worth walking down the byzantine road, a road made mostly of marble that connects Lefkes with Prodromos. MarpissaA beautiful traditional settlement built amphitheatrically with bright-white houses, narrow scenic alleys and several old churches which is ideal for unique photos. During your visit there do not neglect to drop by the church of Agios Athanassios where the Post-Byzantine Icon Collection of Marpissa is housed with over 100 metabyzantine icons of the 16th and 17th century. Butterfly ValleyOn west Paros, south of Parikia, lies the Butterfly Valley in Psychopiana, an important natural habitat. It is an area with running water and rich vegetation where the endangered Panaxia Quadripunctaria butterfly finds shelter.
