Attractions in NaxosAttractions On NaxosArchaeological MuseumThis is the largest and most important archaeological museum of Naxos but not the only one, as there are three others (one at Metropolis square, one at Aperathos village and one at Ano Sagri). The Archaeological Museum of Naxos has the most complete collection, except that of Athens of course, on Cycladic artifacts. Venetian MuseumThe Venetian Museum lies at the center of Chora, you will come across it when walking the alleys of Kastro. Besides the impressive exhibits of the Venetian period there is a panoramic view of the port and Portara. Do not overlook the basement, as it hosts more exhibits and souvenirs for sale. Geological MuseumFounded on 1966, this is one of Greece's richest museums of its kind. More than 2000 stones, minerals, alloys, fossils, etc from all over the world are exhibited here. You can even see volcanic rocks from Vesuvius, gems form Brazil and fragments from meteorites. The fossils section has some rare specimens from Greece and other parts of the world. It is found in the mountainous Aperathos village. Museum of Natural HistoryHere you can see a collection of 265 oyster shells, many types of fish and a large natural aquarium with sea water. Besides the sea section, there is also a section with plants and one with bone specimens from the ancient mammals of Naxos, including the dwarf elephant. It is found in Aperathos. PortaraPortara in Greek means "the huge door" which is exactly what it is, as it is 6 meters high and 3,5 meters wide. That entrance is what is left from the ancient temple of Apollon which was never completed. This is the most highly photographed attraction of Naxos. It lies on a rock at the edge of the harbor. CastleThe castle that overlooks Chora was built at 1207 AC by Marco Sanudo, first Duke of the Aegean. Nowadays there are several little shops and taverns inside the castle making it a great stroll. This is the most important castle on Naxos but there are more castles (like Apalirou Castle and Trageas Castle) and towers (Glezos Tower and Bazeos Tower). ApiranthosApiranthos (also known as Aperathos) is the most picturesque and famous mountainous village of Naxos. It is a very scenic settlement, built with stone and marble, that hosts lovely shops, great taverns and some museums! Temple of DemetraClose to Sagri village at Gyroula lies the ancient Greek temple of goddess Demetra. The largest part of the temple has been destroyed, but there is still enough to see. This temple is a very important monument of the ionic order and it was made entirely using white marble. Himarou TowerThis 15 meter tall marble tower was built on Naxos during the Hellenistic ages and was probably a fortified outpost. It is one of the most important and most well kept monuments of Naxos. It is located in Filoti village. Kouros (Melanes)A gigantic 6 meter statue of a man figure of the 7th century BC, a famous attraction on Naxos, was found half-finished close to Melanes village. This type of statue is called Kouros and is typical artistic period of the archaic ages. It lies on the ground, probably on the same position where it was curved by the ancient artist. Kouros (Apollonas)Another 10 meters tall Kouros on Naxos, found close to Apollonas village. It is dated at the 6th century BC and it is speculated that it represents god Dionysos.
