If you get tired it is worth taking a brake in the museum cafeteria, as it also offers a nice sea view. Entry costs 6 euro and the summer opening hours are 8:00 - 20:00 (except Tuesdays), but is also valid for the Chania Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Collection, the Kissamos Archaeological Museum and the Aptera Archaeological Site. Chania Byzantine CollectionA small yet interesting museum at the edge of the Venetian harbor. Its collection hosts some of the most rare items of byzantine and post-byzantine art in Greece. Chania Folklore MuseumA remarkable museum in the Chania old town (Chalidon street 46) with impressive and rare exhibits. The entire folklore museums is essentially a representation of the old Cretan house that really takes you back to that era. Entry costs 3 euro and the museum is open daily (except Wednesdays). Right besides it lies he lovely cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption. Crete Maritime MuseumThe Maritime Museum is housed in a two-store building located a the end of the Venetian harbor. It is a worth-while museum with impressive exhibits. In addition the history of seafaring up until today is presented while part of it is dedicated to the Battle of Crete. Entry costs 3 euro and the summer opening hours are 9:00 - 16:00 (except Sundays). Samaria GorgeOn the south side of Crete lies the famous Samaria Gorge, the second longest in Europe, where the hiking route is about 16 kilometers long. After at least 6 hours of walking, having started from Omalos, you reach the lovely beach of Agia Roumeli. Along the way there is running water, but even if it is summer and here is none you are bound to come across various springs, as well as the cute kri-kri climbing the rocks. Kourna LakeClose to the prefecture of Rethymno, a bit after Georgioupoli (just 10 minutes by car) lies the beautiful Kourna lake in a landscape of unparalleled beauty. There is also a shop selling local products like honey and a large variety of wine produced by the monks. The monastery is open daily 9:00-17:00. Platanias War MuseumIn the area of Platanias, just a 20 minute drive from Chania town, lies the underground war shelter that has been developed for tourism. It is basically a 170 meter underground gallery with rooms where various items from the time of the war are exhibited, as well as articles and photographs of that era. It is a unique experience as the surrounding area really takes you back to that era. Entrance is free. Chania Municipal Art GalleryThe Chania Art Gallery is housed in a three story building of Chalidon street within the old town. Besides the permanent collection it occasionally hosts various remarkable periodical exhibitions. Falassarna Archaeological SiteOn the way to the amazing Falassarna beach it is not a bad idea to make a stop to the Falassarna Archaeological Site. The site is open for free during 8:30-15:30 (except Tuesdays) while there is also a free smartphone app with a representation of the ancient Falassarna harbor.
