Beaches Of Crete - HeraklionOn Heraklion, like the rest of Crete, there are countless amazing beaches for every taste. - Matala (Southwest Crete - Heraklion): A small sandy beach, one of the most famous beaches on Heraklion, which lies in front of the caves. It is well organized with water sports, while the caves add something special to the scenery. The nearby Kokkini Ammos (or Ammoudi) beach is more quiet.
- Lenta (Southwest Crete - Heraklion): The crowded sandy beach of the homonymous settlement. Here you will find rooms to let, restaurants, cafes etc. Nearby there are two more beaches, west is Diskos (or Dytiko) and east is Loutra. Diskos is a narrow wide stretch of thin pebble and sand, popular with nudists, while having some tourist facilities. Loutra is more quiet with pebble and shade.
- Koudoumas (Southwest Crete - Heraklion): A quiet pebble beach in a small bay with beautiful calm water, just below the Koudouma monastery. It is not unusual to have free camping here.
- Vathy (Southwest Crete - Heraklion): A beautiful beach with turquoise waters in a small sandy bay with rocks into beautiful shapes. There are no facilities, but it offers peace and tranquility. The beach is accessible by a dirt road of nine kilometers, but you can also come by boat from Agia Galini and Matala.
- Kali Limenes (Southwest Crete - Heraklion): A beautiful and quiet beach with dark sand. The magnificent blue water are usually calm here, even when it is windy. The rooms and restaurants of the small village are at your disposal.
- Agiofarago (Southwest Crete - Heraklion): The spectacular scenery with high cliffs and beautiful waters, gathers large crowds. The beach has amazing blue water, pebble and sand.
- Kalamaki (Southwest Crete - Heraklion): A large sandy beach connecting Timpaki with Kommos. The beach has umbrellas and sunbeds, while the village is full of lodgings and restaurants.
- Kommos (Southwest Crete - Heraklion): A vast stretch of sand with lovely sea, cedars and sand dunes where the Caretta Caretta sea turtles lay their eggs. There is a beach-bar, a few straw umbrellas and sunbeds.
- Keratokampos (Southeast Crete - Heraklion): It is laid with sand and large stones. It is only one of four consecutive beaches in Southern Heraklion, Keratokampos, Fafflagos, Psari Forada and Tertsa.
- Agios Nikitas (Southeast Crete - Heraklion): A beautiful beach with dark pebbles and beautiful turquoise water. It is located beneath the cliffs of the cape, beside the homonymous monastery. You will climb down a few stairs to reach it.
- Tsoutsouros (South Crete - Heraklion): A nice sandy beach. It is a half an hour walk to the neighboring Maridaki where you will find cold but clear sea.
- Tris Ekklisies (South Crete - Heraklion): A beautiful and quiet beach with gray pebbles and blue water. The beach has rooms to let and taverns, while some houses almost reach to the sea. The only access is through a dirt road.
- Mavri Paralia (South Crete - Heraklion): The combination of thin gray pebble, emerald water and towering rocks produce an enchanting setting. The beach is accessible only by sea, while a bit west lies the White Beach.
- Trypiti (South Crete - Heraklion): Wide sandy beach with calm waters and some tamarisk trees. It can also be accessed through the canyon, a unique experience as at some points the car barely fits through. There is a canteen, and often enough a few caravans parked here.
- Agia Pelagia (Northwest Crete - Heraklion): A popular organized beach full of hotels, rooms to let, taverns and shops. It is shelters from the winds, while there are diving schools and water sports. In the west there other other beaches, like Kladissos, Nononafti (smaller) and the popular Psaromoura bay.
- Fodele (Northwest Crete - Heraklion): It is partly organized with a lifeguard, a huge hotel, rooms to let, restaurants, etc. It is exposed to the wind and it offers sand, pebble and tamarisk trees.
- Ammoudara (Northwest Crete - Heraklion): A large sandy beach, fully equipped with dozens of hotels, restaurants, and shops. It is exposed to the wind, and is therefor favored for water sports.
- Stalida - Malia (Northeast Crete - Heraklion): Consecutive beaches that connect the two settlements. The total 4 km stretch of sand is organized in places with lots of people and water sports. Malia is a fully organized beach, popular especially among young people. In the area there are many hotels, taverns and restaurants, while both beaches are exposed to the wind.
- Hersonissos (Northeast Crete - Heraklion): A fully equipped beach with loud music and dance until the morning. Every summer it is literally taken over by thousands of foreign young tourists who are partying non stop. It is very long with thick sand and crystal clear sea.
