Beaches Of Chios

Chios has a lot of lovely beaches scattered around the island. Most of the best ones are located on the west and southwest coast of Chios. Here are its most popular beaches in clockwise order:
  • Salagona (West Chios): A large pebble beach on the west coast facing southwest. There are no trees for natural shade, but it is organized with umbrellas, sunbeds and a canteen. Access is through the main road and there is plenty of parking space, as well as an automatic ramp for handicapped people.
  • Avlonia (West Chios): An organized beach with sand and thin pebble on the west side of Chios. The sea is a bit cold but it is very clear and usually calm, as it faces southwest. It offers easy access, a lot of parking space and a canteen.
  • Lithi (West Chios): Lithi Beach is a small sandy beach located on the west coast of Chios. The beach is not very popular, making it an excellent option for those looking for a more secluded spot. There are no umbrellas or sunbeds available for rent, and access is by car or foot.
  • Trachili (West Chios): A beautiful secluded beach on the west coast of Chios. The large pebble beach is not popular due to the hard access, as the last part of the dirt road leading to the beach can be rough on the car so you might have to walk the rest of the way. The beach is exposed to the wind and there are very few tress for shade, so be prepared.
  • Elinta (West Chios): Elinta Beach is a nice unspoiled pebble beach located on the west coast of Chios. It is ideal for windy days due to its south orientation and there are some tamarisk trees for shade. The sea is crystal clear but it is not ideal for families with children, as it gets deep as you get in. The beach is not very popular, as the road leading there is not good, making it an excellent option for those looking for some peace and quiet.
  • Prastia (West Chios): A lovely sandy beach on the west facing south. It does not get a lot of people because access is through a long dirt road. The sea is shallow and clear but there is no natural shade. On the left side of the beach there are some rocks forming another tiny private beach ideal for isolation.
  • Komi (Southwest Chios): Komi Beach is one of the most popular beaches on Chios Island, located on the southwest coast. The beach is long and sandy, stretching for over 1 kilometer, and it is perfect for families with children. There are several beach bars, restaurants, and water sports available, making it a popular destination for tourists. Access is by car or bus.
  • Kato Fana (Southwest Chios): Kato Fana Beach is a lovely beach located on the southwest coast of Chios. The beach is not very popular, making it an excellent option for seclusion. The beach is mainly sandy and the sea is shallow making it an ideal choice for families with kids. There is nothing on the beach except from very few tamarisk trees so take provisions. The beach is easily accessed as the dirt road leading there is rather smooth.
  • Agia Dynami (Southwest Chios): A small stunning sandy beach a bit north of Kato Fana. There are only a few large tamarisk trees and the beach tends to get crowded. The parking space is right behind the picturesque Agia Dynami church. The beach has a northern orientation so if it gets windy it is a good idea to walk a bit to the north to the smaller Agia Dynami beach that has an opposite orientation.
  • Apothika (Southwest Chios): A large secluded beach with sand and thin pebble facing southwest. What really makes it stand out is the wild beauty of the surrounding landscape, making up for the difficult access. There is a beach bar overlooking the beach with a great view but there are quite a lot of stairs down to the beach. Note that there are only few umbrellas and no natural shade. You can rent a sea kayak for a short trip to the impressing caves.
  • Mavra Volia (South Chios): Located on the south coast of Chios, Mavra Volia Beach is a unique black pebble beach with crystal clear sea that stretches for over 300 meters. The beach is very impressive due to the large black pebbles that are a result of volcanic activity, making it the most famous beach of Chios. Mavra Volia beach can be easily accessed by car and while it is not organized, there are some tamarisk trees along the coast where you can find some shade.
  • Karfas (East Chios): Located on the east coast of Chios, Karfas Beach is a long and sandy beach that stretches for over 1.5 kilometers. The beach is fully organized, with umbrellas and sunbeds available for rent. There are also several beach bars and restaurants nearby. Access is by car or bus.
  • Glari (East Chios): A popular small sandy beach on the east coast, 10 km north of Chios town, that easily fills up. It is an organized beach located in a narrow bay that shelters it from winds with a beach bar that offers umbrellas and sunbeds. There is no parking so everyone parks on the main road and climb down the stairs leading to the beach.
