Information On Psara

Psara are found in the Northern Aegean, very close and a bit west of the northern edge of Chios. Psara is a dry and barren island with wild landscapes, especially on the east side. It is strange that there are no snakes on the island, and this is believed to be because of its soil.

Psara is a historical island as it was completely destroyed by the Turks during the Greek Revolution. The Mavri Rahi (Black Ridge), which became famous thanks to Dionysios Solomos, is the small peninsula southwest connecting the settlement with Paleokastro. There lies the Castle and the two churches, that of Agios Ioannis Prodromos and that of Agia Anna.

On Psara there is only one settlement which is built amphitheatrically around the harbor. The houses here are white, tiled and two storey high, and among them lies the house of konstantinos Kanaris. On the central square you can see the Iroon, a monument with the names of the Holocaust victims inscribed on it.

Psara is an ideal destination for quiet and relaxing holidays. There is no nightlife on the island, with the sole exception of one bar that is located in the settlement.

On Psara there is an annual festival for the celebration of Panagia at the homonymous monastery. The entire island parties all night through with homemade food, wine, traditional music and dance.

On Psara there is a gas station and a branch of the National Bank of Greece.
