Donoussa is part of the island complex of Small Cyclades and it is the northern island of the complex, which also includes Iraklia, Koufonissia and Schinoussa.

On Donoussa there is a total of four settlements, Stavros, Messaria, Mersini and Kalotaristissa. Stavros is the harbor of Donoussa and at the same time its capital, while the other three villages are almost uninhabited. Donoussa is a typical dry island of Cyclades, with the exception of the Mersini village where there is a spring with running water of great quality and a huge platanus tree.

If you are lucky enough to be on Donoussa on September 14th you will witness the great celebration of Stavros, followed by a fete where the locals will treat you patatato (local recipe with meat in red sauce and potatoes).

Donoussa is a very small island well suited for quiet and relaxation, without any nightlife.

Donoussa only has few beaches παραλίες but all of them are picturesque with clean sea. Most beaches on Donoussa are easily accessible by boat. Here are the main beaches of Donoussa:

• Stavros (West Donoussa): One of the most popular sandy beaches of Donoussa with easy access and turquoise sea.
• Fykio (Southeast Donoussa): A small peaceful beach with lovely green-blue water and caves in the rocks.
• Kedros (South Donoussa): A beach in a small bay with clean blue water and golden sand.
• Vathi Limenari (South Donoussa): A small and quiet beach with deep green water and white pebble.
• Livadi (South Donoussa): The most beautiful beach of Donoussa with turquoise water and gorgeous white sand.
• Kalotaritissa (North Donoussa): A large bay that hosts three small beaches of Donoussa, Mesa Ammos, Vlyho and Sapounohoma.

The trip from Piraeus is 7 hours. Alternatively you can reach Donoussa from Naxos, as they are only one hour away by boat. There is an helicodrome on Donoussa for emergencies.

There is no public transportation on Donoussa but there are a couple of taxis. Donoussa is a very small island so you can manage without a car as you can walk or take the boat to the beaches.

Most accommodation on Donoussa is found at the traditional settlement of Stavros, where the island's harbor is.

The most traditional dish of Donoussa which is served at festivities is patatato, meat in red sauce with potatoes. Other local delicacies include kavourmas (pork fried in fat), pastourmas (bites of pork with herbs dried under the sun), octopus cooked on ember and buttered squid.

On Donoussa you will find a rare type of cheese, axialomizithra which is a soft white cheese made with yogurt.

A water cave that impresses visitors with its colorful water and the curved chamber with the little stalactites.

Fokospilia

The cave is decorated with corals and stalactites. The amazing water coloring makes it one of the most popular attractions of Donoussa.

It is worth coming here to see the findings of the Geometric Age settlement and to enjoy the great sea view.
