Information On Crete - Heraklion

Heraklion is one of the four prefectures of Crete and it is located between Rethymnon and Lasithi (eastern Crete).

The capital of Heraklion prefecture is the homonymous Heraklion town. Heraklion is not picturesque town but has some strong points and attractions. The powerful Venetian walls of Candia (16th century) are impressive with the major portals that define the old city. At the entrance of the harbor lies the Castle Koules which is open to the public, hosting various exhibitions and performances.

The main feature of Heraklion are the countless attractions and the amazing beaches. The distances on Crete are huge, but by driving you can get to other places on the island. It is a good idea to stay many days, in order to see as much of Crete as you can, although it is impossible to manage to see all of it.

Crete on the whole is an island where you can find whatever you are looking for. There are quiet areas for accommodation and deserted beaches for those who want a peaceful vacation, while there are also cosmopolitan beaches with bustling tourist resorts for intense holidays.
