Information On Anafi


Anafi is located in the south-east part of Cyclades. It is generally a dry piece of land, like most islands in Cyclades, but there are small oasis here and there as a result of running water found on Anafi.

According to Greek Mythology, the argonauts were in danger due to a heavy storm while sailing and Jason prayed to god Apollo asking for help. At that moment the island of Anafi came out of the ocean, saving the Argonauts and their ship. The island was named after that legend, as Anafi means the island that appeared out of the see.

Anafi is almost untouched by tourism, so it offers visitors a taste of true Greece and Greek tradition on all levels. People of Anafi are famous for their building skills and architectural style, so you can expect to see beautiful traditional architecture.

There is almost no nightlife on Anafi, as it is an island for those who seek peaceful and relaxing vacations.

Since there is only one ATM on Anafi, it is wise to carry enough money with you.

Beaches Of Anafi


Anafi has a some great sandy beaches. The most popular are the one at the south part of the island, as they have nice golden sand and they are protected from the wind. To reach most of the beaches you will have to walk from some point on, as very few have easy access. By the way, there is no organized beach on Anafi.
  • Vagia - Kyparisi (West Anafi): Large quiet beaches with big pebbles and rocks in the water.
  • Agios Georgios (Southwest Anafi): Quiet beach with crystal clear green water and rocks.
  • Katalimatsa (Southeast Anafi): A very small beach, surrounded by red rocks.
  • Megas Potamos (Southeast Anafi): A quiet sandy beach with a few white pebbles and a great view of Kalamos.
  • Agioi Anargyroi (Southeast Anafi): A beautiful small sandy beach that is surrounded by high rocks.
  • Monastiri / Prasies (Southeast Anafi): A large beach with thick golden sand and thin pebble.
  • Agios Nikolaos (South Anafi): The only beach of Anafi with easy access. It has very clean waters and great golden sand.
  • Klisidi (South Anafi): This is a long and wide beach with golden sand and clear water.
  • Katsouni (South Anafi): A beautiful beach with nice thin sand.
  • Flamourou (South Anafi): It is next to Katsouni beach.
  • Roukounas (East Anafi): The largest and one of the most popular beaches of Anafi with thick golden sand and thin pebble.

Travel To Anafi


A trip by ship from Piraeus would take you around 10 hours. There is a slightly easier way to reach Anafi and that is through Santorini, which also has an airport, with the trip from Piraeus by boat being 5-8 hours (conventional vs high-speed ship). From Santorini to Anafi its is a short trip of 2 hours, but this trip is done 3 times a week and not daily, so make sure you double-check the schedule of the two ships.

Transportation On Anafi (Car Rentals)


Having your own transportation, even a motorcycle, is advisable, as the the buses are not as frequent as you would like. You will find the bus route table at the mini-market in Chora. In any case you cannot completely avoid walking, as you can not reach most beaches by car only.

Accommodation On Anafi (Hotels, Apartments, Guesthouses, Rooms to let)


Most rooms to let and hotels are in Chora and this is exactly where you should stay. This is because the village is built amphitheatrically on the mountain side and consequently almost all rooms have a breath-taking view of the sea and the harbor. Most rooms are basic and of the same level more or less, so do not expect to find anything fancy for your stay.

Chora is the main attraction of Anafi due to its beauty.

At the highest point of Chora lie the ruins of the Venetian Castle of Anafi.

On Anafi, there is only a small archaeological collection in Chora, next to the community building.

The monastery was built during the 17th century at the point where Kalamos peninsula is connected to the rest of Anafi.
