The oldest traces of habitation on Kea dating back to the late Neolithic Period (3200-3000 B.C.) and were discovered in Agia Irini and Cape Kefala. In the settlement of Kefala stands out the cemetery with the built orthogonal or circular shaped graves which is considered to be the first of its kind found in the Aegean. At Agia Irini settlement the most important discovery is that of a unique for its period temple devoted to the prehistoric female goddess.
