According to local legends this is the cave of the cyclops Polifimos, son of god Poseidon, who was blinded by Odysseus. The rocks that Polifimos launched against the ship of Odysseus are supposedly the Avelonisia islets (Small Avelas and Big Avelas) right across the south-west edge of Iraklia. This cave is very close to the Cave of Agios Giannis, so be careful not to confuse them.
